Trauma
Sudden injuries like car accident, falls, etc can cause sudden and severe pain. It is best to stay off the injured foot and come in for assessment
Diagnosing:
Xray, Ultrasound, Exam. Experience in testing the joints and ligaments is what separates a specialist from general practitioner. Subtle findings can be everything in treatment of foot injuries
A ligament tear, capsule injury and trauma to the bottom of the great toe. This injury is often missed diagnosed, not treated accurately, and thus career ending in sports
Diagnosing:
Exam, MRI, Xray, Ultrasound
Treatment:
Sift, thorough evaluation and imaging through Dr. Barnett will build
an aggressive and complete rehab plan. Options range from boots, casts, bone stimulation, electrical stimulation, shockwave, regenerative medicine, laser, or reconstruction surgery. Dr. Barnett has mastered and performs a unique and effective bracing/reconstruction surgery previously documented by Dr. Anderson on Pat Mahomes with the Kansas City Chief. Careful followup and rehab by Dr. Barnett leads to the fastest more effective recovery.
Pediatric Injuries
Pediatric injuries is one of the focuses of Dr. Barnetts practice. Kids often get injured in activity and sports and not one speciality outside podiatry treats it all. With advanced training in pediatric orthopedics at the University of Louisville, under guidance from Dr. Shari Gabriel, Dr. Barnett is on the cutting edge of pediatric injuries.
Treatment:
Casting, bracing, splints, physical therapy, and surgery.
Surgery will only become an option if conservative will not allow for proper
healing, but an expert in foot growth plates and bone structure is key to proper healing. Dr Barnett knows when surgery is absolutely necessary and will do the necessary rehab to get the child back in the game. Dr. Barnett has treated several Tampa Jesuit athletes, junior olympians, and kids that simply have a love for being active. Parents can rest assured their child is in the best care from start to finish.
Ankle/Foot Sprains
Ligaments are non flexible structures inside the body that hold bone to bone. When flexibility, injury, genetics, or systemic problems occur the ligaments can be torn or long standing damage can happen with the way someone walks. Injured ligaments or sprains can cause temporary or chronic pain and instability and
alter walking, limit motion, and hinder activity.
Diagnosing:
Exam, Xray, Ultrasound, MRI, 3d gait lab, diagnostic blocks
Treatment:
This is vital for a specialist to assess. Some ligament sprains heal on
their own, some need surgery, and all need proper course of healing. The goal is protect the healing ligament while allowing as much walking and activity as possible. A foot expert can utilize the latest advancements to heal safe and effectively. Dr Barnett utilizes Tayco braces, laser, shockwave, regenerative medicine, and advanced rehab to get people on their feet and back to activities as fast as the body will allow.
Flat Feet
This is extremely common in the population and involves the act of “collapsing arches”. There is both a factor from bone structure and how someone walks that causes fallen arches and foot pain. The longer flat feet are not treated the worse the pain. It causes tendon damage, ligament damage, swollen feet, and later arthritis. It can be corrected in a variety of methods
Diagnosing:
Exam, Xray, ultrasound, 3d gait lab, MRI, CT
Treatment:
Orthotics, bracing, physical therapy, class iv laser, shockwave, regenerative medicine, surgery (different procedure for severity, age). Ages for surgery are children and elderly
High Arch
Also known as cavus feet, the cause is genetic, gradual progression, trauma, nerve damage, tendon damage, poor walking style and gait abnormalities
Diagnosing:
Xray, Exam, 3d gait analysis, MRI, CT, Ultrasound
Treatment:
Bracing, orthotics, wedges, physical therapy, stimulator, surgery (Reconstruction is the primary method to resolve cavus foot type problems). Dr Barnett is versed in every type of surgery for this condition tailored to each individuals needs and lifestyle goals.
Club Feet
Club foot is a bending inward and down of the foot on the ankle. Referred to as Talipes Equinovarus, it can either be congenital or acquired form injury or nerve damage.
Diagnosing:
Xray, MRI, CT, Exam, 3d gait lab
Treatment:
Bracing, Orthotics, injections, physical therapy, surgery
Foot Drop
The problem where the foot will not bend up voluntarily or is very weak causing the way someone walks to be severely altered. Usually not painful but creates major issues in joints and tendons in other parts that take the altered stress. Usually caused from nerve damage, trauma, infections, arthritis, systemic illness. It can be resolves or accommodated.
Diagnosing:
Vital to see a foot expert. Nerve testing, nerve biopsies, exam, Xray, Ultrasound, 3d gait lab
Treatment:
Nerve stimulation, bracing, physical therapy, Laser, Shockwave, nerve vitamins, Advanced surgery. Dr Barnett specialized in tendon Transfers to restore motion or fuses joints to allow stable lever arm for more stable walking.
Bone Spurs/Haglund’s Deformity
A bone spur is a protrusion of bone growth generally caused by arthritis, tight tendons, narrow joints, foot deformity, or injury. It is common in the foot and ankle and has many options of correction and pain. A haglunds deformity is a large bone spur inside the achilles tendon (pump bump) at the back of the heel.
Also viewed as a big toe joint “bump,” hallux abductovalgus if a protrusion of the first metatarsal and a curving over of the big toe towards the second toe. It makes wearing shoes difficult and often gets swollen and red at the joint. This condition is genetic and also progresses as time goes on. There are many misconceptions about what a bunion is and what is needed to resolve it.
Diagnosing:
Xray, CT, 3d gait lab, exam
Treatment:
There are many options to resolve pain from shots, pills, creams,
orthotics, dynasplints, bracing, pads, wider shoes, open toed sandals, physical therapy. All these are geared at resolving pain but none actually corrects the problem. Only surgery. Surgery involves correcting the toe and fixing the maligned metatarsal. Dr Barnett fixes the root cause through minimal or reconstructive techniques to prevents recurrence. Every toe is different, therefore surgery is tailored to each person through careful planning.
Hammertoes
A “curling and turning of the little toes of the foot. Caused from nerve damage, genetics, biomechanics, or injury, curling toes can cause ulcers, joint arthritis, and pain in shoes.
Diagnosing:
Xray, Exam, 3d gait lab
Treatment:
Unique evaluation and age related assessment. Splints, physical
therapy, tenotomy, orthotics, shoe gear, and surgery
Congenital Deformities
There are many foot conditions that are genetic and congenital. Examples include club feet, coalitions, conjoined bones, malunions, hammertoes, bunions, CP foot, pes planus.
Diagnosing:
Xray, ultrasound, MRI, CT, Exam, 3D gait lab
Treatment:
Bracing, orthotics, injections, physical therapy, laser, shockwave, surgery. Only true correction permanently tends to be surgery.
Achilles Pain
The Achilles Tendon is the largest tendon in the body with poor blood flow. Injuries to the achilles can either be sudden or over time, causing swelling, pain and trouble walking.
Diagnosing:
Physical examination, ultrasound image, and 3d gait lab/analysis
Treatment:
Bracing, orthotics, oral Medication, Shockwave, Class IV Laser,
Physical Therapy, Regenerative Medicine, CBD, last resort is surgery
Tendon Pain
Tendons connect muscle to bone and move joints actively. Known as tendinitis, or inflamed tendons, a damaged tendon can be very painful and hard to walk with. Caused by overuse, injury, nerve damage, foot type, altered gait.
Diagnosing:
Xray, Ultrasound, exam, 3d gait lab, MRI
Treatment:
Goal for Dr Barnett is allow tendons to heal while staying active.
This involves protecting the joint and tendon but allow walking. Dr Barnett utilized advances braces, shockwave, laser, exercises, physical therapy, and orthotics to resolve and cure the problem. You must get to the root of the tendinitis to ensure it resolved quickly and completely. Dont just mask the pain, Cure it. Dr Barnett specializes in the most advanced treatments in medicine.
Nerve Pain
Nerve pain, or electrical signal problems, is very common and often misdiagnosing, under treated, and debilitating. Pills are not the sole answer. Patients will never be given the cookie cutter answer, there is no cure, just “live with it”.
Diagnosing:
Root cause is vital. Nerve biopsy, EMNG, NCV, MRI, Exam, Ultrasound, 3D gait lab
Treatment:
Dr. Barnett has custom built multimodal modalities to more effectively treat nerve pain. Nerve stimulation, class iv laser, shockwave, compounds, supplements, CBD, orthotics, bracing, advanced rehab protocol developed by Align Foot and Ankle.
Arthritis
Bone are connected to each other by joints. A joint allows movement and the bond ends are covered with cartilage, fluid, and a joint capsule. Think of a sealed balloon with liquid inside. Over time, either due to injuries to the joints, systemic issues like gout or autoimmune disease, or wear and tear, the cartilage wears down and limits motion and causes pain and swelling.
Diagnosing:
Xray, CT, MRI, Exam, lab work, 3d gait lab
Treatment:
Cartilage cannot regenerate so the goal is to allow walking while limiting stress to the affected joint. This includes bracing and orthotics. The
inflammation can be addressed with oral meds, injections, laser, cbd. If all fails, surgery involves either realigning, replacing, or fusion the affected joint depending on the root cause.
Gait Imbalance & Tight Calves
Tight calf muscles in research has been linked to over 20 foot problems from bunions and hammertoes to neuromas and stress fractures. The most common side effect is calf cramping or heel pain.
Diagnosing:
Exam, 3d gait lab
Treatment:
It generally takes a month of stretching for every year the calves have been tight. Slow and steady wins this race. Dr. Barnett has the most advanced splints, exercises, machines, and therapy agenda to resolve the issue. He can utilize laser, shockwave, needling, and rarely minimal invasive surgery to resolve the problems tight calves create.
Heel Pain/Plantar Fasciitis
There are several causes of heel pain, and plantar fasciitis is the most common. Caused most commonly from tight calves, muscle imbalance, gait compensation, and inflammation, plants fasciitis can be one of the most painful foot conditions that rarely need surgery. Other causes of heel pain include heel fractures, cysts, nerve damage, and tendon damage.
Diagnosing:
Xray, Ultrasound, Exam, 3d gait lab and biomechanic analysis
Treatment:
Evidence based treatment options from stretching, physical therapy,
custom and etc orthotics, equines splint, laser, shockwave, regenerative medicine, rarely but occasionally surgery.
Calluses/Dry Skin
Callus is very painful but very simple to determine. It is a buildup of keratin due to pressure. Generally they form in between toes, over a prominent bone, or from a previous cut or wound.
Diagnosing:
Xray, ultrasound, Exam
Treatment:
Shave with surgical blasé or Dremel, keratolytic creams, prescription
strength urea, medical grade lotions, orthotics, felt padding, surgery to fix root
cause (bone spur, etc)
Warts
A wart is a skin problem caused from HPV virus. The virus causes a spot on the foot that can be painful, bleed, and form hard skin. It hurts to walk and put pressure when it gets big enough.
An itchy patty rash on the soles and tops of the feet that can be very pain, contagious, spreading, and unsightly.
Diagnosing:
Exam, Scrape biopsy, punch biopsy, culture/PCR
Treatment:
Oral and topical steroid, antifungals, class iv laser, customized compounds, preventative care protocol and products specific to Align Foot and
Ankle
Sweaty Feet
Known as hyperhidrosis, sweaty feet is overactive sweat glands on the feet combined with bacteria that cause discomfort and odor. It affects millions a year and there are solid options available.
Diagnosing:
Exam, cultures, biopsies
Treatment:
Drysol, urea, botox, Podoexpert cream, compounds, special socks and
shoe liners and sterilizers
Fungal Toenails
Similar to a tree that shows severe bark damage, toenails can become thick, discolored, and painful. It can involve one to ten toenails and all ages are vulnerable to nail damage. One of the most common causes of nail damage is onychomycosis, or nail fungus. It is one of the hardest ailments to treat due to the anatomy of the toenail, invasiveness of the fungus, and the slowly growing nail. A toenail only grows 1 mm a month so even the most effective treatment takes a long time to show results. Slow and steady wins this race!
Diagnosing:
Exam, nail biopsy, PCR and nail cultures
Treatment:
A toenail expert will guide and build a custom plan with the highest
level of success known to research. Oral medication with current research and evidence, class iv laser, advanced topical compounds and gels, nail removal, Keryflex, Onyfix
Ingrown Nails
Nails are made of keratin and grow on the nail bed. Nails can have a variety of shapes. The more curved the nail is genetically the more prone to injury or pain. Ingrown toenails are a condition in which the nail irritates the nearby skin causing swelling, redness, pain. A true ingrown is an infection of the skin due to nail pressure.
Diagnosing:
A physical exam by Dr. Barnett is required to determine whether the nail is incurvated, involuted, or a paronychia. This is vital for properly treating the problem. This simple and common problem is often mis-diagnosed which delays proper treatment.
Treatment:
Oral medication, foot soaks, topical nail softeners, onyx nail restoration, slant back cutting, nail avulsion, matrixectomy. All depends on the root cause of the “ingrown” pain.
Diabetic Charcot Arthopathy
Diabetes affected millions of Americans, and a foot complication involves joint damage. Nerve damage mixed with vascular problems cause the minerals to wash away and walking in unsupportive shoes tends to break these vulnerable joints down. It causes the foot to change shape, bones to fracture, and ulcers to form. Very few doctors specialize in every option for this complex disease.
Diagnosing:
Blood work, CT, MRI, Xray, Exam, bone biopsy, 3d gait analysis
Treatment:
Early and aggressive treatment by an expert saves limbs! Braces, stimulation, casting, complex surgery performed at the highest technical level by
Dr. Barnett.

Diagnosing:
Cultures, Exam, Xray, MRI, CT
Treatment:
Debridement, hyperbaric oxygen, supplements, offloading shoes and
casts, custom orthotics, bracing, skin grafts, regenerative medicine, surgery
Cosmetic
Genetics, injuries, shoe gear, and age create unsightly foot problems at times. Dr. Barnett offers minimal invasive cosmetic surgery for a variety of ailments. He combines innovative surgical techniques with evidence based medicines and products to give unsightly feet a bright new future.
